Budget woes In cleaning up the mess at the Cook County morgue, Board President Toni Preckwinkle pointed to management problems at the medical examiner’s office — but also noted that state and county budget woes had contributed to the problems. The state’s budget for burials for people on public aid dropped $13 million across Illinois last year. But some of the budget cuts at the medical examiner’s office were put in place by Preckwinkle. Among the ramifications of Wednesday's signing of right fielder David DeJesus is that once-promising outfielder Tyler Colvin, who slumped significantly in his 2011 sophomore season, is officially back to prove-it status. The lefty hitter who hit 20 home runs as a rookie 2010 never got on track in '11, slumping from the start of spring training and spending much of the season at AAA. Since the veterans-committee process was altered in 2001 to include large numbers of Hall of Famers as voters, no players have been added to the Hall via this process -- leading to multiple changes over the past decade. But many believe this will be Ron Santo's best chance for enshrinement in that span, and the Cubs have put…

  • Coy Williams: Sox GM on Cespedes et al

    27 Jan 2012 | 9:17 pm
General manager Ken Williams was coy when asked about prize Cuban free agent outfielders Yeonis Cespedes and Jorge Soler and lefthander Gerardo Concepcion. It was hard to know if Williams thought the Sox were in the mix for their services and wanted to lay low or whether he knew the Sox wouldn't be able to afford one or all of them. The Sox are known to have interest and are considered to be one of the teams in the mix for Cespedes, although many consider the Cubs to be front-runners. "I don't know who you are talking about,'' Williams told reporters when asked about the Cubans. You know,…
  • White Sox' Floyd learns to deal with trade rumors

    27 Jan 2012 | 8:52 pm
There were those who would have wagered a tidy sum that right-hander Gavin Floyd wouldn't have been around for SoxFest. His named has been tossed around in numerous trade rumors ever since general manager Ken Williams said the Sox were going to rebuild or tweak their roster to get younger. He is signed through this season with a club option for 2013. His value as a middle of the rotation starter makes him a valuable piece for buyers and sellers. "You know it's happening [trade talk] but you have zero control over it so to think about it for a second is a waste of your time,'' Floyd said.
  • Thornton White Sox closer? That's news to Coop

    27 Jan 2012 | 10:15 am
A day or so after White Sox manager Robin Ventura said that lefthander Matt Thornton was probably the leading candidate to close games, pitching coach Don Cooper expressed surprise at the first-year manager's statement. "Who said that? You're giving me news,'' Cooper told the Mully and Hanley Show on Friday morning. "It's news to me.'' After Cooper, who was en route to SoxFest at the Palmer House, listened to Ventura's comments, he said, "Well, you got more info than me.'' Righthander Jesse Crain has expressed a desire to have a shot at the job and was thought be many to be the leading…
  • White Sox' Rios could be backed into a corner

    27 Jan 2012 | 9:04 am
Alejandro De Aza was the White Sox' best center fielder last season, hands down. He got good jumps, took good angles to fly balls in the gaps and played the position with some life. Alex Rios, on the other hand, took a step back not only with his bat but in the field, as well. And we're not talking about how he played so deep in center. It was a curious development for a center fielder who has been an adequate glove man for most of his career. So it comes as no surprise that manager Robin Ventura and general manager Ken Williams have been talking up De Aza as a leadoff man and center fielder.

  • Previous experience with Bears could give Phil Emery a leg up

    28 Jan 2012 | 2:10 am
Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery remains the favorite to be named the Bears’ general manager after his second interview with the team Friday at Halas Hall. The Bears will name either Emery or New England Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht to succeed Jerry Angelo, who was fired by team president Ted Phillips last month. Licht had his second interview with the Bears on Thursday. No timetable is set, but the Bears ‘‘don’t expect a decision to take too long,’’ a Halas Hall source close to the hiring process said Friday night. Emery, 53, is…
  • Bears’ general manager will have hands full

    27 Jan 2012 | 8:34 pm
Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery still is considered the favorite to succeed Jerry Angelo as the Bears’ general manager. But whether it’s Emery or Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht, the winner will have a heavy workload the minute he signs his contract. Though coach Lovie Smith is an untouchable and the core of the Bears’ roster for 2012 is intact, hiring a general manager in the middle of the evaluation period for the draft and free agency puts the Bears in catch-up mode. But there’s more to it than that. When player evaluation and poor draft …
  • Bears need wideouts, but they can be hard to project

    26 Jan 2012 | 2:19 am
MOBILE, Ala. — I have no idea if Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick has soft hands or an exceptional ‘‘get-off.’’ I don’t know if he’s sudden in and out of his breaks or whether he’s a long-strider with a wide catching radius or a burner who accelerates toward space and has high-end speed. He’s 6-5, 220, claims he has a 39-inch vertical, says he’ll run a 4.4 40 — and he can catch the ball and run with it. That makes him a candidate to help the Bears. Quick isn’t the best wide receiver at the Senior Bowl. He’s …
  • Phil Emery gets ringing endorsement for Bears' GM position

    25 Jan 2012 | 1:16 pm
MOBILE, Ala. — Scott Pioli, who helped build the New England Patriots’ dynasty with coach Bill Belichick, takes a low-key approach as the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. But when asked Tuesday to talk about Chiefs college scouting director Phil Emery, Pioli gladly agreed to an interview at the Senior Bowl — with one condition. He wanted time to think about his answers because of his respect for Emery. “The things that stand out are his work ethic, his work habits, how detailed he is, how meticulous he is,” Pioli told the Sun-Times. “He’s a very good teacher, …

  • Phil Emery wraps up interview, decision may come soon

    27 Jan 2012 | 5:04 pm
The Bears wrapped up a lengthy interview at Halas Hall with Phil Emery Friday, and they could make a decision on their next general manager sooner than later. Emery of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jason Licht of the New England Patriots are the two finalists to replace Jerry Angelo as the Bears' general manager. Licht concluded his second-round interview Thursday. If the Bears select Emery, there's nothing that limits their ability to make that announcement. But if the Bears select Licht, they'll need written permission from the Patriots, since the the club's season is not yet over. They'll…
  • Thomas Dimitroff impressed at how Phil Emery handled demotion

    27 Jan 2012 | 9:10 am
When he was named general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, Thomas Dimitroff made some changes to the scouting department. One of them was bringing in David Caldwell to serve as the college scouting director. That meant Phil Emery, who had been in that position, would need to be fired or re-assigned. Dimitroff demoted Emery to a regional scout for the 2008 season, and he was impressed at how the veteran scout handled it. "He didn't rock the boat," Dimitroff told me Wednesday. How impressed was Dimitroff? When close friend Scott Pioli -- whom he'd worked with several years in New England -- took…
  • A chat with Oklahoma CB Jamell Fleming

    27 Jan 2012 | 9:02 am
MOBILE, Ala. -- The most enjoyable conversation I had with a player at the Senior Bowl was with Oklahoma cornerback Jamell Fleming. He's a high-energy young man, with a genuine enthusiasm for everything. Interestingly, he's represented by Earl Bennett's agent, and the topic of skinny jeans came up. Needless to say, Fleming isn't a fan -- of skinny jeans, that is. And yes, he did speak to the Bears while he was in Mobile. Here's my chat with him. Q: How has this week been for you here in Mobile? A: It's been a great experience. It's fun and different. I'm just trying to soak it in. you only…

Audie Cole is big: 6 foot 5, 239 pounds. But, he's got to prove he's also fast. At the NFL Combine, he'll have to run better than the 4.8 he's been clocked at in the past. Otherwise, he could be a mid-round pick. Here's my conversation with him. Q: What do you need to do to improve your draft stock at the NFL Combine? A: I'm just trying to improve at everything. I want to try and go into the meetings that I'm going to have, and show them that I can play at the next level. Q: You grew up in Michigan. Are you a Lions fan? A: Well, I grew up just south of Detroit, when Barry Sanders was playing.

MOBILE, Ala. -- If performance were all that mattered, cornerback Janoris Jenkins would be a first-round pick. But three off-the-field incidents (two related to marijuana possession and one for fighting and resisting arrest) led to his dismissal from Florida and could hurt his draft positioning in April. To his credit, Jenkins, who played last season at North Alabama, didn't hide from his issues at the Senior Bowl. Here's my interview with him. Q: What are you trying to convey to the NFL coaches and scouts? A: I'm just trying to come across that I'm a good kid. I made a few mistakes, and I…

  • Rose attacks, dominates Bucks

    27 Jan 2012 | 10:31 pm
If you're Derrick Rose, there are times to get your teammates involved and times to be a scorer first. With Bucks center Andrew Bogut out with a broken ankle, and the Bulls without primary scorers Luol Deng and Rip Hamilton because of injuries, Friday night's game at the United Center called for the latter. Rose has said his sprained left big toe will affect his game for the rest of the season and at times since his return that has been evident. But his ability to change directions, elevate and take opponents off the dribble was as devastating as he scored 34 points in a 107-100 win that…

If you think the condensed schedule has been tough on the players imagine what the Bulls' training staff is going through. Athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi and his staff will have to treat themselves for cramps and dehydration if they are forced to keep up this pace much longer. On a night when Taj Gibson returned to the floor late in the first quarter after missing three games with a high-ankle sprain, Rip Hamilton re-appeared on the injured list with a bruised thigh sustained in Wednesday night's loss to the Pacers. Hamilton was unable to finish Friday morning's shootaround and was considered…

Out with the old, in with the new. . . BOWLED OVER AGAIN: Michigan's overtime victory vs. Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl gave the Big Ten a 4-6 mark this bowl season. It's the eighth time in nine years the league has not had a winning post-season record. One explanation: Because the Big Ten has had an at-large BCS team eight times over that span, its teams have been moving up, and often facing more difficult matchups. That's especially true at the high end. The league is 1-9 in  Jan. 1 bowls (played on Jan. 2 as an NFL courtesy this year) the last two years, including a 1-4 mark…

Northwestern hosts Purdue Saturday at Welsh-Ryan Arena at 3 p.m. It will be a chance for the Wildcats to forget about two 20-plus point losses at Wisconsin and at Minnesota, with the loss against the Golden Gophers probably the tougher one to swallow. The Wildcats missed their first 14 shots and shot 36 percent. Northwestern's RPI this week stands at 36. If the Wildcats were to get into the NCAA tournament it would probably be because of their RPI -- or if they win the Big Ten tournament in March. But NU coach Bill Carmody isn't really a fan of the RPI. He was asked Monday about Murray State and whether or not they should get a high seed in the tournament, since the No. 11 Racers are the last team in college basketball with an undefeated record (20-0). NU missed its first 14 shots and went on to shoot only 30 percent (9 of 30) from the field in the first half and a paltry 32.7 percent (18 of 55) for the game. It was the second consecutive loss for the Wildcats and the second in a row where the 'Cats lost by at least 20.
